Work out what you need to bill each week to cover your vehicle, GST and extra income tax โ€” and how far you are from profit.

Inputs & assumptions

Your week

Count only the kilometres you drive to collect and deliver, not your whole day's driving.

Vehicle costs

Business-use portions, per year. Depreciation is a non-cash cost โ€” it is real, but you don't hand over cash for it.

GST

Courier-only contractors generally register once turnover reaches $75,000.

Are you GST registered?

GST registration rules differ for passenger rideshare and courier services. Confirm your circumstances with the ATO or a registered tax agent.

Tax assumption

User-supplied simplified tax assumption โ€” not a complete Australian tax calculation.

No Medicare levy, offsets, HELP repayments, other brackets, extra deductions or superannuation are included.

You break even at

$63.85 a week

That is $3,320.00 of deliveries a year, or $0.32 per courier kilometre, just to cover fuel, insurance, servicing, tyres and depreciation.

Every dollar above that is profit โ€” your $349.56 target sits $285.71 past the line.

How this is calculated

  • Courier kilometres per week are multiplied by the weeks you work to get annual business kilometres, and fuel is that distance at your litres/100 km and pump price.
  • Only fuel you would not have burned on that trip anyway counts as a cost โ€” with a full route match, fuel is free. Extra fuel, insurance, servicing, tyres, depreciation and other business costs make up your annual vehicle costs, divided across your working weeks.
  • Extra income tax is the tax on your other income plus courier profit, minus the tax on your other income alone โ€” so it only counts the tax your deliveries actually cause.
  • The required revenue is solved for: the smallest amount of GST-exclusive revenue where profit after vehicle costs, less that extra tax, still pays your weekly target.
  • GST collected on deliveries is not income. It is shown separately, and only when you are registered.

Estimates only. This calculator uses user-editable assumptions and a simplified tax formula. Actual tax, GST registration, GST credits, deductibility, insurance requirements and vehicle costs depend on individual circumstances. It does not include every Australian tax obligation or benefit. Seek advice from the ATO, a registered tax agent or an appropriately qualified insurance adviser.
