One quick step before you start earning

To get paid for deliveries, the ATO needs you to have an Australian Business Number (ABN). It's free, takes about 15 minutes, and you only do it once.

What's an ABN, and why do I need one?

An ABN is a unique 11-digit number the government uses to identify your delivery work as a sole trader. HitchaRide needs it so we can pay you correctly and you can declare your earnings at tax time.

Don't worry โ€” getting one doesn't make you a company or lock you into anything. It's simply how sole traders operate in Australia.

Common worries โ€” sorted

"Will I have to register for GST?"

No. You only register for GST if you earn over $75,000 a year from all your sole-trader work. Most HitchaRide drivers stay well under that, so GST isn't required.

"Will this mess up my tax return?"

Not at all. You simply include your HitchaRide earnings as sole-trader income at tax time โ€” and you can claim work-related costs like fuel.
